ETHANOL

A readily available, low-carbon and drop-in solution at hand
Ethanol is a game-changer solution in the quest for alternatives sustainable fuels due to its versatility and environmental benefits, emitting up to 80% less greenhouse gases (GHG), into the atmosphere than Brazilian gasoline.1
Brazil is the world leader in the production and use of sugarcane ethanol as a biofuel: An example of its usage is that since the introduction of flex technology in 2003, allowing vehicles to run on gasoline, ethanol, or a blend, Brazil has reduced CO2 emissions by 600 million tons. That is equivalent to planting 3.8 million hectares of trees in the Atlantic Forest, comparable to Lebanon's size.
Raízen has a strong investment plan for the construction of new cellulosic ethanol plants. As of now, 9 plants have been announced, with two of them already built - Costa Pinto (Piracicaba, São Paulo) and the recently inaugurated Bonfim (Guariba, São Paulo) - with a total annual capacity of 114 million liters, making Raízen the world’s largest sugarcane ethanol producer.

Raízen unlocks ethanol's full potential with pioneering advanced biofuels

Cellulosic Ethanol
Raízen is the only company in the world that produces Cellulosic Ethanol or Second-Generation Ethanol (E2G) in commercial scale. It provides up to 50% of increase in ethanol production with the same planted area and no additional land due to its waste-based origin, while also eliminating competition with food production. Additionally, it stands out as a biofuel with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry, showing a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to Brazilian gasoline and a 30% reduction compared to first-generation ethanol (E1G).

Ethanol for SAF
To address the scenario of net-zero emissions by 2050 in the aviation sector, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) emerges as an important solution. Raízen was the first company in the world to have its sugarcane ethanol certified by the ISCC Corsia (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) Plus standard as feedstock for SAF production in the Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) route.

Ethanol for Biobunker
Raízen has partnered with Wärtsilä to study the use of ethanol as maritime fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provide new options for customers seeking sustainable fuel alternatives and contribute significantly to the discussion on the energy transition in the sector, which also has the goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

Ethanol for Renewable Hydrogen
Raízen, along with Shell Brasil and other partners, are studying the conversion of ethanol into Renewable Hydrogen to use it as fuel for heavy fleet and industries. Using ethanol as vector for transporting hydrogen would cheapen and facilitate its logistics by using existing fuels distribution infrastructure, unlike hydrogen in its gas form, which requires storage at low temperatures and high pressure, complicating logistics.

Ethanol for bioplastics
Raízen's ethanol is already transformed into renewable ethene by Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and the world leader in the production of biopolymers, originating the renewable plastic I’m green™ bio-based. The polyethylene and EVA resins are then sent to the manufacturing industry, creating various products that are part of the daily lives of thousands of people, from shoes to packaging and irrigation pipes.

SUGARCANE

A Unique Green Solution

Sugarcane's journey from field to fuel ensures easy traceability due to its short storage life, promoting accountability and sustainability at every step. Certification systems uphold high standards, preventing the use of raw materials from deforestation.

The climate and geography of Brazil also enhances its potential, enabling high yields and efficient production. In fact, sugarcane yields about 7,000 liters of ethanol per hectare, surpassing other sources and the technology of second-generation ethanol (2G) promises even greater efficiency.

Ethanol
Brazilian sugarcane does not contribute to deforestation: over the past 20 years, more than 99% of the expansion of the crop has not occurred in native vegetation.2
Sugarcane cultivation area occupies only 1,2% of the Brazilian territory.3
Sugarcane cultivated areas in Brazil removed about 9.8 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere per year. Over the past 20 years, this amount is equivalent to 1 million soccer fields or 80 times the city of Paris covered by forest.4

Social and Environmental Responsibility in the sugarcane value chain

Raízen has a program for sugarcane suppliers called ELOS, taking geographic traceability of raw materials seriously: certification systems ensure compliance with high standards in the production and processing of sugarcane and its by-products, eliminating the possibility of using raw materials from illegal deforestation and ensuring social responsibility in its production models.

Currently, 80% of our plants are certified by Bonsucro, and we're committed to achieving 100% certification by 2030. We ensure our processes are both efficient and ethical, benefiting local communities and the environment. Our commitment to Bonsucro reflects our dedication to responsible practices throughout our sugarcane supply chain.
